How Your Handicap is Calculated
Your Handicap Index reflects your potential playing ability, calculated using your recent golf rounds following the World Handicap System, which is the official standard used by England Golf and iGolf.
Each round you play generates a differential, which compares your score to the difficulty of the course you played, using:
- Your gross score (actual strokes played)
- The course’s rating (expected scratch golfer score)
- The course’s slope (difficulty for bogey golfers)
For 9-hole rounds, the scores and course ratings are doubled to equate to an 18-hole round.
Your Handicap Index is then calculated by averaging your best differentials (adjusted for the number of rounds played) to represent your demonstrated ability.
This system ensures fair competition by allowing you to compete on a level playing field, regardless of course difficulty.
